  1. Prompt Injection Queries
    Attackers insert hidden instructions within normal-looking prompts to access confidential information. These prompts can jailbreak the model and expose internal data or private system instructions that were never meant to be shared.
  2. Inference Probing Queries
    Attackers ask the same question in multiple, slightly different ways to infer whether specific names, passwords, or data exist in the model’s memory. After several iterations, this technique can reconstruct exact pieces of memorized data—such as emails, phone numbers, or source code snippets—even without direct database access.
  3. Context or Prompt Oversharing
    Users may unintentionally input confidential business data (like API keys or internal documents) into public AI chatbots for assistance. Once entered, this data may be stored by the provider and could later be retrievable.
  4. Role-Reversal Queries
    The attacker asks the AI to role-play or simulate unrestricted access to its hidden layers. Even AI systems without direct access can synthesize plausible hidden information from internal weights, potentially reconstructing real examples from their training data.
  5. Prompt Chaining Attacks
    Attackers split prompts into stages—each harmless on its own but malicious in combination—to extract sensitive information piece by piece. This sequential method allows exploitation without triggering filters that would normally block a direct data request.

AI’s biggest threat to sensitive information is its memory. While AI doesn’t create new ways to breach data, it can empower existing methods and weaken the privacy barrier.
